The
mission of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is to
protect human health and safeguard the natural environment - air,
water, and land - upon which life depends. The EPA's National
Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL)
supports the Agency's regulatory decision-making process by investigating
the potential risks that environmental contaminants may pose to
humans and ecosystems.
The Environmental Protection Agency is responsible for regulating
the amount of pollution to which citizens can be exposed. To ensure
that all Americans have the same basic health and environmental
protection, the EPA sets limits on how much pollution can be in
the air, soil, and water anywhere in the United States.
One important result of EPA research is the 1990 Clean Air Act.
Under this Act the EPA sets limits on air pollution and assists
states with clean air programs. This Act, continued EPA research,
and concerned citizens will reduce air pollution over time.
Look forward to it!
