Frequently
Asked Questions
What
are the studies like?
Some studies involve simple blood donations and others are more
complex and time consuming. Many are done in small rooms with
carefully controlled air content. You might be asked to breathe
into special instruments or to exercise on a bicycle or treadmill.
People of all levels of fitness can volunteer.
Other studies occur away from the Human Studies Facility. They
might involve monitoring the air in your home or work place, or
you might be asked to keep special daily records.
What are
my risks?
Most breathing experiments at the Human Studies Facility involve
common air pollutants like carbon monoxide, ozone, or concentrated
air particles. Levels of exposure are generally no more than people
often encounter every day. Certain procedures (e.g., bronchoscopy,
in which a thin tube is used to examine the lungs) may be required
depending on the particular study. Before you begin any study,
the amount of risk will be explained to you and given to you in
writing.
Studies that occur away from the Human Studies Facility measure
your normal exposure to pollution.
What if
I get started and I don't like it?
You can stop any study at any time. You will always be paid for
the portion of the study that you finished.
What will
I get paid?
You will be paid for both screening and studies. Studies pay a
minimum of $12 an hour with additional amounts paid for the more
complex experiments. Bonuses are often paid for studies that last
more than one day. Payment for participation ranges from as little
as $20.00 to over $1,000.00 depending upon the time and effort
involved in the study.
You can also be paid for referring others who qualify to participate.
We pay you $10.00 for every healthy young person you refer who
is eligible for studies and $20.00 for every individual with asthma,
chronic lung disease, or other "special group" being
studied.
